Artwork Series: "Dedication"

Over 250 years of Japanese culture has been distilled down to one word. It is a beautiful paradox. Dedication. To truly embody the truth contained within this word one must completely surrender to spending a lifetime of devotion and unending loyalty to mastering their craft. Red symbolises excitement and passion in Japanese culture. It is passion, love, and excitement. Within this one act are centuries of traditional, methodology, loyalty. It is, Geisha.

“Once you decide on your must immerse yourself in your work. You have to fall in love with your work. Never complain about your job. You must dedicate your life to mastering your skill. That's the secret of success...and is the key to being regarded honorably.”

For anyone that’s seen my previous travels, probably knows I’m fairly obsessed with Japan. During my travels and alley exploring, we were lucky enough to find the Geisha spot. This sparked a huge adoration for the life of Geishas. Dedication is inspired by my love for Japan and more specifically the commitment of a Geisha.

Dedication was inspired by a number of Japanese inspired elements. Initially with Kanji, traditional Japanese characters - On the left side (down) reading Meiko (younger Geisha, in training) and the right side (down) reading Geiko (fully fledged, mature Geisha), represents the journey of a Geisha from starting as a “Meiko”, to graduation of a “Geiko”. The use of the colour red in Japan represents passion, love, and excitement and the obvious feature of a traditional Geisha representing the beauty of the almost majestic and mysterious women, as a tribute to their choice of surrendering to a lifetime of devotion to their craft.

A lifelong commitment to learning a craft, the life of a Geisha resonates so deeply to my choice in leading a creative life.
